About Michelle Matthews

Michelle Matthews is currently a Captain in the Missouri National Guard and works at the Crime Victim Advocacy Center, a non-profit agency, as the Director of Training and Education. She has a Master’s degree in Communications from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from St. Louis University. She has served the U.S Army for 16 years including active duty, the U.S. Army Reserves and the National Guard.

Michelle wanted to write and publish this book for two reasons. First, for cathartic reasons. She believes that writing about her journey before, during and after war will allow her to release her emotions and feelings about her experiences. She is dedicated to self-growth and found writing this book healing. Second, she believes that giving a “voice” to surviving war will allow others to find their “voices” and begin to heal from war. Having her own thoughts and feelings validated was the beginning of her healing process. War is very difficult and coming home is hard to navigate. It is life changing and very challenging, but through support, patience, love and lots of work.
